Brief

The current issue with the WCWP app is that it is overly minimal. It plays music from WCWP and The Wave but it really does nothing else. WCWP and The Wave provide so much content through a variety of radio shows and live performances. The only issue is ensuring that this content can be easily accessed by users. Creating an app that is engaging to users is essential to increase the reach of the content.

Project goals include:

-Being easily utilized at all LIU events and allows students to listen to their peers at any time.

-To make it easy to access shows and other content run by LIU students.

-Becoming the go-to place to discover and listen to LIU students who make music.

-Keeping students updated on events around campus and where they can go to hear their peers live.

-Helping student hosts and musicians reach a larger audience.

Part 1: Research

Competitive Analysis

Name: Apple Music (Radio)

Strengths: It has great use of hierarchy; emphasized content is very large and prominent at the top of the screen for people who just want to quickly access music and more specific content is found smaller for people who are really trying to find something specific.

Threats: Implementing too many levels of hierarchy can create a sense of clutter.

Name: Spotify

Strengths: Takes a more straightforward approach. Every option provided to the user looks similar. This is good for users who know exactly what they want to listen to.

Threats: There is minimal use of hierarchy so there are no featured items that help guide indifferent users who just want to quickly listen general content.

Spotify app screens

Name: Pandora

Strengths: Use of hierarchy falls somewhere between Apple and Spotify.

Threats: The Style is very minimalistic which is effective but can easily get stale, especially for younger users.

User Analysis

Age/Job/Location:

18-24 years old.  Students have a wide array of career paths so it makes more sense to simply identify them as students. Users reside on Long Island, NY.

Needs & Goals:

To access music presented by the station, show hosts or LIU’s musicians either to play at campus events or for their own personal interest.

About:

Younger people tend to respond better to an interface that prioritizes imagery over text and dynamic use of color over consistency.

Personality:

It can be assumed that the primary user enjoys listening to music and being involved with campus life. Based on this assumption we can assign the target user as an ENFP. personality (Extroverted, Intuitive, Feeling, Perceiving). ENFP personalities carry an interesting blend of carefree sociability, sparkling imagination, and deep, contemplative introspection.

Conclusion

WCWP in its current state, struggles to angle itself as a radio station made for LIU students run by LIU students. It needs to convey itself in this unique multifaceted manner in order to successfully stand out in the era of streaming and serve the LIU community.
